INRI – King of the Jews
Medium: Reclaimed New Mexican Wood Cross and Plaque, Vintage Railroad Spike, 1800’s English Bible, Nepalese Paper, Waxed Linen Thread, Ethiopian Coptic Stitching
Artist Statement: The center piece of this red wood cross, symbolic of the blood of Jesus, is the plaque inscribed with the letters INRI. The Bible tells us that Pilate placed over Christ’s head on the cross the Latin acronym inscription INRI, which in English translates, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. The inscription appears to be a mockery of Jesus’ claim of Messiahship and royal lineage from King David. But, when Pilate asks Jesus if he is a King he replies, “My kingdom is not of this world, but from another place. You say that I am a King but, in fact, the reason I came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
