On A Hill Far Away
Medium: Vintage Carved Wood New Mexican Cross, 1800’s German Bible, 1st Century Roman Crucifixion Nail, Nepalese Paper, Waxed Linen Thread, Ethiopian Coptic Stitching
Artist Statement: I don’t know the history of this old cross, but my wife found it hidden behind some chairs in an old New Mexican Trading Post. The cross’s rugged character made me think of the first line of the hymn, The Old Rugged Cross…..”on a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suffering and shame.” The rare first century Roman Crucifixion spike mounted in the center of the cross is indicative of the suffering Jesus endured.
