Artist Statement: The dragonfly is an iconic symbol of many Native American tribes in the Southwest, and has a variety of meanings. This particular dragonfly was made by a Zuni artist. Ask Zunis about ‘Dragonfly’ (Shumak’olo:wa) and they will tell you that among other meanings, the Dragonfly is the messenger who carries prayers to the Spirit World. The double-winged form of Dragonfly is sometimes referred to as the “Pueblo Cross.” This piece recognizes the importance of prayer and the cross in both the Native American and Judeo-Christian traditions.
