Corbel Cross

Medium: New Mexico Architectural Wood Corbel Cross, Antique Iron Hooks, 1800’s English Bible, Nepalese Paper, Waxed Linen Thread, Ethiopian Coptic stitching

Artist Statement: This piece uses two massive Spanish Colonial Corbels to form a cross with a large repurposed Bible hanging from huge rusted barn hooks. Variously designed corbels grace most Spanish style homes. Corbels, by definition, are designed to support weight, usually roof beams. This cross made from corbels is symbolic of how Christ followers find Jesus is a “support” in times of trouble, knowing they can put their full weight, or faith, in Jesus. For Jesus has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. So we say with confidence, The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5-6)
