Artist Statement: The background for this piece is a rare antique Ethiopian Christian goat skin prayer scroll handwritten in Geez, a 2,000 year old liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Usually, these scrolls, also referred to as healing scrolls, are made to be the length of the person who commissioned them. This scroll contains a series of prayers and Christian texts and depicts saintly figures and a guardian archangel with drawn sword to protect against illness and evil influences. Orthodox Ethiopian Christians keep these personalized prayer scrolls rolled and attached to their clothing at all times for protection and as a reminder to regularly keep their prayer requests before God.
